Almost everybody pushes water-based lubricants these days. They say it’s “safe” for all conditions. They also claim that silicone lube causes damage to silicone toys. These beliefs are almost universal, but I disagree with both of them.
I did manage to find this blurb about the silicone-on-silicone belief: https://www.squarepegtoys.com/support/silicone-lube-myth/
I’m a big fan of silicone, both lube and toys, and I’ve never had any problem with the combination. Admittedly I tend to steer clear of cheap-ass toys (which is a superset of “cheap ass-toys”), so maybe those are more susceptible because they’re made of crappy materials and poor processes. I think the lesson to be learned there would be to avoid such crummy toys, not to avoid silicone lube.
Why am I such a fan of silicone lube? Cuz it’s feakin’ awesome. I personally use Uberlube (Überlube for the pedantic). Hypoallergenic. Even edible. Colorless, unscented, tasteless. And it lasts TONS longer than water-based lubes. Even a little dab will suffice for a long time without having to reapply every few minutes. This is great for lengthy masturbation (solo or mutual) and especially anything anal.
Anal sex is where the safety issue really arises for lubes. Water-based lubes run out way too quickly. You can try slathering on a ton of it at the outset, but this all but ruin the experience, is really messy, and still doesn’t last long enough to go the distance. Let’s hope you never have to find out what anal is like without lube or after it runs out. You can do some real damage: anal fissures, bleeding, or worse.
Silicone lube can actually be good for skin or even styling hair. Weird but kinda cool too. It’s not processed by the body so it just passes through without being metabolized, same as the better artificial sweeteners. Water-based lubes can’t make that claim, plus there are additives that may or may not be a problem for some. The better silicone lubes tend to be rather pure and far safer all ‘round.
Oh, and it doesn’t feel cold when first applied. That’s a nice little benefit.
I really can’t say enough good things about silicone lubes and specifically Uberlube. It’s been all good experiences for Mr. and Mrs. Hammers. Lubricated but not slimey or slippery. Not messy. Just the right viscosity. Goes the distance. Harmless to textiles. Easy to clean with soap and water. And safe on toys. What’s not to like?
If any readers have contrary experience, especially with silicone lube messing up silicone toys, please share in the comments. Be specific, if possible, like including brands and models, so we can research the quality of the materials, just in case that is indeed a factor. If your experience, like mine, busts the myth, though, you’re welcome to share that too.
